This is how drive testing is such a deep topic. You need to try and match the load, and consider all the things. CrystalDisk does not do that. You can set up some really good tests with iometer. (I think that's waht it's called, i can't remember now it's been a long time and can't look it up atm)

@Obsolesce said in LibreOffice - Runs so slowly: @scottalanmiller said in LibreOffice - Runs so slowly: In giant shops (thousands of users and up), the problem with MS Office is that you don't pay for it just for the users who would benefit from it, but you pay for it for everyone. That is so totally false. I have not seen that anywhere, including where I currently work which is many thousands users. So your claim is what... that they 1) don't actually pay for the software or 2) they use it only for a few people who would actually benefit from it or 3) the kind of work that they do is both appropriate to an office suite and so insanely heavy that they actually get to the point where MS Office is noticeably more efficient, yet still an appropriate tool to use? If any of those, how does that work? If 1... okay piracy. If 2... how do they interoperate with others, or is it all office suites for only individual use? If 3.... what the heck kinds of tasks are they doing that are so different than any other company?

@scottalanmiller I wasn't referring to sleep mode. Windows use to have varying degrees of shutdown, I'm pretty sure it still does.

@jaredbusch said in KVM under fedora workstation - improve performance: I have zero issues using virt manager viewr for my local guest VM for remote, I would use RDP or ScreenConnect. Nothing wrong with it when needed, but it doesn't need to perform well for its role.

It's neat because it is a rare test where basically only the kernel is different. So you really get to see Linux vs. NTKernel rather than artefacts of the entire stack.

@Tim_G said in Accelerate your backups with StarWind Virtual Tape Library and Microsoft System Center Data Protection Manager: Everything on the StarWind VTL side is great. It was quick and easy to install. I installed it on Hyper-V Server 2016, and it went flawlessly. I was able to remotely connect to and manage the VTL without issue across two sites. The more time consuming parts was setting up SCDPM. But it's Microsoft, so you'll have that. We'll simplify virtual images delivery (seed & back-seed) with the next update

@BRRABill said in Backups - how much does backup performance matter to you?: @scottalanmiller said in Backups - how much does backup performance matter to you?: @BRRABill said in Backups - how much does backup performance matter to you?: All a function of time and need and money. Only time and money, need in a business is always a function of money. I mean all of them combine. You are correct. Need dictates the other two. Well, the other two dictate need. Businesses aren't a "need" based thing. They have a goal: profits. Backup restore time is a discussion about time. So the technical piece gives us the time axis and that we are talking about a business gives us a cost one. That's it. The idea of "need" should never really come up in a business, businesses never need to do anything. They desire profits and all actions should reflect that. The concept of needs only serves to confuse people from the singular mission.
