Loosing good account reps seems to be the norm in the SBM... a sales person often seems to start out on the SMB desk, if they excel, they are promoted to other desks. This has happened to me at least three times across different vendors.

Its a nice concept, but unless you can purchase more than 2 chassis for ultimate redundancies, your eggs are still in one basket, shared with the storage.

But in IT, eggs in one basket is a good thing, not a bad one. It's better to have your storage in the same basket as your servers, even when doing an IPOD. The worst option is to separate them.

I'd certainly love one of these for a home lab. That's for sure!

I can see the whole ROBO deployment scenario. Even in single/several use situations, like you mentioned... such as for specific critical high-performing services that won't outgrow it. Anywhere else, I'd feel stuck with it... what happens if you start to outgrow the resources? How scalable is it? That's what would determine it's worth for usage in place of regular 2u deployment servers.

Maybe I'm just not a blade type person.

It's really meant for contained scenarios where you know how big you will grow. For a normal SMB, the issue is growing into it, rather than outgrowing it.

I don't care about the hardware, but I have always bought Dell because the onsite warranty costs were better.

I have clients that prefer one thing or another for whatever reason. But I care not.

I'm not sure I understand brand loyalty especially where servers are concerned. They are commodity hardware now, and have been for the past several years, get what you need for the moment at the best price and move on.

You are reading something into what I said. I said I buy dell because the warranty is cheaper. Period. I did not say anything about the parts. I also have not bought a new server in years. Last few have been from XByte.

Nope, not reading anything into what you said. Using your comment, that your customers have a preference, to spring board to something else.

Those preferences don't matter though, because they are just responses to marketing. They are not IT people and have no idea. Thankfully there is no difference as we have all said.

I want them to get Ubiquiti!

I assume this is used / returned gear again? I have never any second hand Ubiquiti hardware worth anything.

I guess the switches will be once they are old enough to have a secondary market.

Do you see it with Juniper or HP? I'm happy with refurb, but don't want used with those either (I don't want Cisco even new) but xByte doesn't sell used, primarily, only refurb so effectively new.

      I agree you - it's a waste of $10K.

Scott's comment digested means - we can either have some money in the bank, or we can spend it. Sure, since we have money in the bank we can spend it today/now.... and if we need that $10K for something else, something more important tomorrow - Oh well, I guess we'll live without because of our shortsightedness.

In the interest of reliability and compatibility, we opted to only support enterprise level SSDs. We actually only recently supported non-Dell drives because of those same reasons. We started talking with Edge and found a partner who would co-developer firmware to limit the risk to our customers. If Dell makes a firmware change, we didn't want our customers to experience any issues with their drives.

That what made me reaaaaaaaaaaaaaaally nervous about non-DELL drives.

Not that anything would happen, but the last thing you need is some change form DELL and then your drives stop working, or booting.

Total BS that they do that, but whatever. It's their company and there are other options.
